Where Once They Stood
Spirit of Newfoundland and the C.L.B. Regimental Band will transport the C.L.B. Armoury back in time to become the Regimental Headquarters in 1914.
“Where Once They Stood” – A moving tribute to Beaumont Hamel and Newfoundland and Labrador’s involvement in the First World War (FWW).
This March 16thand 17th, 2016, the CLB Armoury will be transported back in time to become Regimental Headquarters again as Spirit of Newfoundland takes you back to the beginning of 1914 with the King’s call to duty. “Where Once They Stood” is a dramatic, musical and comedic showcase that moves us through Newfoundland’s involvement in the First World War and tells our story through historic facts enhanced with music from the era, from haunting ballads to songs that will make you stand up and cheer.
The show starts at those famous arches outside the Armoury because it was through those arches the first 500 soldiers who volunteered for duty during the First World War marched. The arches are all that remain from a fire that destroyed the rest of the building. The CLB Armoury is important because at the start of the FWW, it was given to the Government of Newfoundland for the duration of the war. It became Regimental Headquarters and the centre for recruiting.
The CLB has partnered with the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador through the Honour 100 Grant Program, the City of St. John’s First World War Commemorative Grant Program and Spirit of Newfoundland to create a show that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Beaumont Hamel and the First World War.
The renowned CLB Regimental Band will play music from the era and a three-course meal will be prepared and served by the CLB catering staff. When the lights dim, Spirit of Newfoundland will take you on a musical journey through the joys and sorrows of war.
Spirit of Newfoundland promises to leave you with a new sense of pride in what Newfoundlanders and Labradorians achieved during the First World War and particularly at Beaumont Hamel.
